Understanding these requirements is essential before purchasing or operating a boat. Whether you are browsing [**boats for sale Long Island**](https://strongsmarine.com/boats-for-sale) or preparing for your first season on the water, here is everything you need to know. --- ## Do You Need a Boating License in New York? In New York, there is no traditional “boating license” like a driver’s license. However, you **must have a Boating Safety Certificate** to legally operate most motorized boats. This requirement is part of **Brianna’s Law**, a statewide regulation designed to improve safety on the water. ### What Is Required? To operate a motorized boat in New York, you must: - Complete an approved boating safety course - Carry your Boating Safety Certificate while operating - Follow all state navigation and safety laws This applies whether you own a boat or are operating someone else’s. --- ## What Does the Boating Safety Course Cover? A boating safety course is designed to give you the knowledge and confidence to operate a boat safely. [![boating-safety-navigation](https://blog.strongsmarine.com/hs-fs/hubfs/boating-safety-navigation.jpg?width=735&height=490&name=boating-safety-navigation.jpg)](https://strongsmarine.com/) Topics typically include: - Navigation rules and right of way - Boat handling and docking basics - Emergency procedures - Required safety equipment - Understanding weather and water conditions - New York boating laws Courses are beginner friendly and are often completed in a single day or online at your own pace. --- ### How to Get Your Boating Safety Certificate Getting certified is a straightforward process: 1. Enroll in a New York State approved boating safety course 2. Complete the course and pass the exam 3. Receive your Boating Safety Certificate Many courses are available online, making it easy for first time buyers to complete before taking delivery of their boat. --- ## Do You Need Certification for All Boats? Most **motorized boats require certification**, including: - Bowriders - Center consoles - Dual consoles - Fishing boats - Personal watercraft If you are shopping for [**new boats for sale**](https://strongsmarine.com/boats-for-sale) or pre owned inventory, it is safe to assume certification will be required. Non motorized vessels like kayaks or paddleboards typically do not require certification, but safety knowledge is still strongly recommended. --- ## Why Certification Matters for First Time Boat Owners If you are new to boating, getting certified is more than just a legal requirement. It is one of the best ways to build confidence on the water. [![driving-a-boat](https://blog.strongsmarine.com/hs-fs/hubfs/driving-a-boat.jpg?width=746&height=497&name=driving-a-boat.jpg)](https://strongsmarine.com/) Benefits include: - Better understanding of boat handling - Increased safety for you and your passengers - More confidence when docking and navigating - Awareness of local Long Island boating conditions For first time buyers exploring [**boats for sale Long Island**](https://strongsmarine.com/boats-for-sale), this knowledge can make your entire experience more enjoyable. --- ## Learn to Operate Your Boat with Confidence At [Strong’s Marine](https://strongsmarine.com), we go beyond just helping you find the right boat.
