Your Fourth of July Boating Checklist for a Safe and Stress Free Weekend

The Fourth of July is one of the busiest weekends of the boating season on Long Island. Whether you're cruising the Peconic Bay, heading to a waterfront restaurant, anchoring with friends, or watching fireworks from the water, a little preparation goes a long way.

Before leaving the dock, use this simple boating checklist to help make your Independence Day weekend safe, fun, and memorable.

1. Fuel Up Before You Go

Fuel docks can become extremely busy over the holiday weekend. Fill your fuel tank the day before your trip whenever possible, and check your engine fluids before heading out.

2. Check the Weather Forecast

Summer weather can change quickly. Review the marine forecast before departure and continue monitoring conditions throughout the day. If thunderstorms are expected, have a backup plan and know where you can safely seek shelter.

3. Bring Plenty of Safety Gear

Confirm that your required safety equipment is onboard and in good condition.

Your checklist should include:

  • Life jackets for every passenger
  • Throwable flotation device
  • Fire extinguisher
  • First aid kit
  • Visual distress signals
  • Working horn or whistle
  • Flashlight with fresh batteries

4. Pack the Essentials

A full day on the water is much more enjoyable when you're prepared.

Don't forget:

  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Hats
  • Towels
  • Plenty of drinking water
  • Snacks and meals
  • Phone chargers or battery packs
  • Ice and coolers

5. Charge Your Electronics

Make sure your phone, GPS, VHF radio, and any portable electronics are fully charged before leaving the dock. It's also helpful to carry a portable battery pack in case your devices need a recharge during the day.

6. Plan Your Route Early

Holiday weekends bring significantly more boat traffic. Know where you're going, review local navigation markers, and allow extra travel time to reach your destination safely.

If you're planning to dock at a waterfront restaurant or marina, make reservations ahead of time whenever possible.

7. Decorate Your Boat Responsibly

Many boaters enjoy showing their patriotic spirit with red, white, and blue decorations. Secure flags, banners, and decorations so they won't interfere with visibility, navigation lights, or safe movement around the boat.

If you're a Strong's Water Club member, don't forget to participate in our annual Dress Your Boat Contest and celebrate Independence Day with fellow members.

8. Leave Extra Time for Returning to the Dock

Boat ramps, marinas, and channels become especially busy after fireworks displays. Allow extra time for your return trip, maintain safe speeds, and stay alert for other boaters navigating in low light.
